Ecology: lesson ideas
Nature and our environment being one of the greatest treasures for humanity are daily destroyed by human beings. While lots of people do care for nature and try to solve ecological problems, others do not know even how to handle it. Ecological problems need urgent and minute observation. Every person has their own attitude on this issue. If you want to discuss this topic with your Intermediate students, here are some lesson ideas.
Task 1: Warm-up
- What does it mean to be eco-friendly?
- Match the activities with the pictures. Choose the activities which you think are eco-friendly.
- Using plastic
- Driving a car
- Riding a bike
- Leaving appliances plugged in
- Planting a tree
- Cleaning up the environment
3) Why have you chosen these activities?
4) Why do you think the rest of the activities are not eco-friendly?
Task 2: Lead-in
Discuss the questions:
- Do you care about our environment? Can you call yourself eco-friendly? Why?
- Which countries do you think are the leaders in caring about our environment?
- Do you donate money or actively campaign for environmental causes?
- If the environment could speak, what would it tell us?
- What are the biggest problems our environment is facing?
Task 3:
Now let’s watch the video about plastic pollution.
Put the events in the mentioned order.
- Bottle one ends up in a landfill. As plastics sit there amongst layers of other junk, rainwater flows through the waste and absorbs the water-soluble compounds it contains.
- Bottles are filled with liquid, wrapped, shipped, bought, opened, consumed and discarded.
- Bottle two, after months lost at sea, is slowly drawn into a place known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Here some animals get entangled in the mess. They mistake the coloured plastic bits for food.
- Some of these compounds are highly toxic. Together they create leachate, which can move into groundwater, soil and streams poisoning ecosystems and harming wildlife.
- Most plastics don’t biodegrade which means they are destined to break down into smaller pieces rotating in the sea eternally.
- Bottle three is brought into a plant where it is squeezed flat and compressed into a block. The blocks are shredded into tiny pieces which are washed and melted so they become raw materials that can be used again.
- Plastic makes animals feel full when they are not so they starve to death.
- Bottle three is now ready to be reborn as something completely new.
B, A, D, C, G, E, F, H
Task 4:
Read the sentences and choose the appropriate meanings of the words in bold.
- Bottles are filled with liquid, wrapped, shipped, bought, opened, consumed anddiscarded. (to collect / to throw away / to use)
- Bottle oneendsup in a landfill. As plastics sit there amongst layers of other junk, rainwater flows through the waste and absorbs the water-soluble compounds it contains. (to find yourself in a place or situation that you did not intend or expect to bein / to find a solution / to follow)
- Bottle two, after months lost at sea, is slowly drawn into a place known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Here some animals get entangled in the mess. They mistake the coloured plastic bits for food. (get lost / get twisted / disappear)
- Plastic makes animals feel full when they are not so they starve to death. (to get a little hungry / to be killed /to die from lack of food)
- Most plastics don’t biodegrade which means they are destined to break downinto (to drop / to separate into / to become smaller)smaller pieces rotating (fall apart / throw away / move in a circle)in the sea eternally.
- Bottle three is brought into a plant where it is squeezed flat and compressed into a block. The blocks are shredded into (to cut sth into small pieces / to melt / to destroy) tiny pieces which are washed and melted so they become raw materials that can be used again.
- – to throw away
- –to find yourself in a place or situation that you did not intend or expect to bein
- – to get twisted
- – to die from lack of food
- – to separate into, to move in a circle
- – to cut sth into small pieces
Task 5:
Watch the video again and answer the questions using new words (discard, end up, get entangled, starve to death, break down into, rotate, shred into).
- How are the bottles made?
- Where does bottle one end up?
- What danger does leachate bring?
- How is bottle two drawn into the Great Pacific Garbage Patch?
- What happens to the animals in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch?
- What is the destiny of bottle three?
- The plastic was formed by chemically bonding oil and gas molecules together. Then the plastic is melted in manufacturing plants and reformed in bottles. Then they are filled with liquid, wrapped, shipped, bought, opened, consumed anddiscarded.
- Bottle oneendsupin a landfill. As plastics sit there amongst layers of other junk, rainwater flows through the waste and absorbs the water-soluble compounds it contains.
- It can move into groundwater, soil and streams poisoning ecosystems and harming wildlife.
- Bottle two, after months lost at sea, is slowly drawn into a place known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
- Here some animalsget entangledin the mess. They mistake the coloured plastic bits for food. Plastic makes animals feel full when they are not so theystarve to death.
- Bottle three is brought into a plant where it is squeezed flat and compressed into a block. The blocks areshredded intotiny pieces which are washed and melted so they become raw materials that can be used again. Bottle three is now ready to be reborn as something completely new.
Task 6:
Tick the best solutions to the problems. Explain your choice.
- Deforestation:
- Join a library instead of buying books.
- Print as little as possible.
- Stop using paper towels.
- Turn the sink water off when brushing your teeth.
- Take shorter showers.
- B) Air pollution:
- Switch off anything that uses electricity when not in use.

- Try to use as little packaging as possible.
- Wrap gifts in fabric.
Task 7:
Discuss the questions in pairs.
- Do you think cars should be banned from city centres? Why?
- How do you think COVID has impacted the ecology?
- Do you agree that since the borders were mainly closed in 2020, there are fewer ecological problems and the environment has somehow recovered? Explain your answer.
- What are the main ecological challenges your country is facing? What measures does your government take to solve the problems?
- How do wars influence our environment? What are the most important things countries must do after wars to recover the environment?
Hopefully, the lesson ideas introduced in the article will turn out to be useful for your classes and your students will enjoy a great deal.
Speaking activities are, obviously, essential for English language speaking classes. A lot of students join classes particularly to develop their communicative competence, become more fluent, versatile, adaptable, and confident communicators in English. However, designing speaking activities might be time-consuming and nerve-wracking for any teacher. We have prepared a memo with superb ready-made speaking tasks that will make your student talking. As you can see there are a lot of ecological problems on the planet. Now think of the following points. Why do we have so many problems of ecology now? Who or what is to blame? What are the main problems? How do you think what problems are the most dangerous in your opinion?
P1: I think one of the most dangerous problems on our planet is global warming, that means the climate all over the world is changing and getting warmer and warmer.
P2: I suppose the main ecological problems include different kinds of environmental pollution: air pollution, water pollution, soil pollution.
P3: Because of the industrial revolution the air is polluted with harmful chemicals, seas and oceans are poisoned with oil spills.
P4: People have to be careful about such things as driving a car or using electricity. Whenever we drive a car, we are adding greenhouse gases to the atmosphere.
You have worked hard. You are tired, aren’t you? I suggest you to relax and do some exercises. You know that there are 4 elements in our nature. Let’s imagine them. AIR – (ученики активно дышат, изображают ветер), FIRE (изображают огонь, тянутся вверх), WATER (изображают плавание) , EARTH (садятся на место).

T: Taking into account all these facts, we should remember that the Earth is our common home. All inhabitants – people, animals and birds need to live in peace and harmony. Our short discussion is over. I’m sure that you’re real friends of our planet. You will do all the best to keep the land, air and water clean, as the Earth is our home. Let’s make a conclusion. What is your opinion towards ecological problems? As for me, the poem “Hug the Earth” by Lorraine Bayes expresses my attitude towards this problem.
Walking along feeling free,
Feeling the earth here with me.
And I love her, she loves me.
I hug the Earth, the Earth hugs me.
She is our friend,
We’d like to be together forever.
The Earth is a garden,
It’s a beautiful place.
For all living creatures,
For all the human race.
Helping Mother Earth
We can peacefully roam
We all deserve a place
We can call our home.
«Introducing laws which contradict to the laws of nature means to generate crimes and then punish for it».
Thomas Jfferson
- «Perhaps, God created the wilderness so that man would smile at the trees.»
Paulo Coelho, Brazilian writer and poet - «Each of us is a particle of nature. We belong to Nature.» Friedrich Engels, German philosopher
- «The Nature can be conquered only when you obey its laws». Francis Bacon, English philosopher, historian, politician
- «Introducing laws which contradict to the laws of nature means to generate crimes and then punish for it». Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States
- «You cannot hide from the laws of Nature».
We have spoken about ecology, problems in the whole. We shouldn’t forget that the ecological situation in the country depends on the ecological situation in our place as well. You’ve chosen the phrase that expresses your concern to this problem and your home task is to write a short essay and explain what this phrase means for you. If you want you can change your opinion and choose another phrase.

- Water and air pollution problems
Water and air pollution are the two main factors that destroy the environment in big cities. Paris has no industry, so the Seine is not polluted by industrial effluents but by sewer waters. However, this problem is being solved by building pollution control stations in a Paris suburb. The sewage is channeled into them and cleansed before it goes into the Seine. When visiting these installations, one can often see how pure water the processed water is – the engineers who work there drink it quite cheerfully.
Water is purified by mechanical and biological methods. The purified water is treated with chlorine and released into the rivers, whence it enters the water supply systems where it undergoes further and finer treatment.
Air is mainly polluted by heating systems and cars. When you look at a modern city from a hill top you get the impression of vapour (smog) lingering over the city especially when there are no winds which can air the city. However, when there is no wind they have smog. As regards heating, mazut and gas are used rather than coal for last years. The poisoned air is the most modern quarters of the city.
District heating is an effective method. Several heat-and-power plants generate steam, which is piped underground all round the city.
As for cars you know, of course, how heavy traffic is in big cities. The slower the traffic, the more exhaust fumes are. This problem will be solved in the near future.
The acuteness of the problem depends on how well the country is developed and on the number of the cars. Many of these problems are international in nature.
